About Univ.-Prof. Dr. Remes
Univ.-Prof. Dr. phil. Derek K. Remes (“Remish”) has served as Professor of Music Theory at TU Dortmund University in Germany since 2024. Born in the USA in 1986, he studied Composition (BM) and Film Music (BM) at Berklee College of Music, graduating summa cum laude in 2010. From 2012 to 2017, he studied Music Theory Pedagogy (MA) and Organ (MM) at the Eastman School of Music, where he received the Performer’s Certificate for “outstanding performing ability.” He relocated to Germany in 2017 to begin a PhD under Felix Diergarten at the Freiburg University of Music, where he also taught as a Lehrbeauftragter. In 2019, Prof. Dr. Remes became a full-time docent at the Lucerne University of Applied Arts and Sciences in Switzerland, completing his dissertation on J. S. Bach’s compositional pedagogy in 2020 (summa cum laude), which won the Society for Music Theory’s Dissertation Award. He has served as co-editor of the journal Music Theory and Analysis since 2019 and is a former editor of GMTH-Proceedings. Prof. Dr. Remes has published in numerous journals and has held lectures in China, Europe, and the USA.
