About Univ.-Prof. Dr. Remes

Univ.-Prof. Dr. phil. Derek K. Remes (“Remish”), born 1986 in the USA, is Professor of Music Theory at the TU Dortmund University in Germany. Previously, he taught at the Lucerne University of Applied Arts and Sciences in Switzerland. He studied Composition (BM) and Film Music (BM) at the Berklee College of Music in Boston (USA, summa cum laude), as well as Music Theory Pedagogy (MA) and Organ (MM) at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester (USA), where he received the Performer’s Certificate for “outstanding performing ability.” In 2020, he completed a dissertation on J. S. Bach’s compositional pedagogy at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg in Germany (summa cum laude) that one the Society for Music Theory’s Dissertation Award. He is co-editor of the journal Music Theory and Analysis and former editor of GMTH-Proceedings. Dr. Remes has published in numerous journals and has held lectures and master courses in China, Europe, and the USA.
